International Airports in Japan

Narita Airport

Narita Airport is one of the busiest international airports in Japan. Narita Airport is located about 57 kilometers from downtown Tokyo. It is one of the international gateways serving the city of Tokyo. Tokyo is accessible by train or bus from Narita Airport. Narita Airport is located in the city of Narita, but some portions of the airport extend into the town of Shibayana.

What is an international gateway? It is an airport where flights from international countries come in. International gateways, like the Narita Airport, are equipped with customs and immigration facilities. As an international gateway, Narita Airport is used by several international airlines ("or carriers"). See the List here .

Wikipedia's Information about Narita Airport: "Narita handles the majority of international passenger traffic to and from Japan, and is also a major connecting point for air traffic between Asia and the Americas. The airport handled 35,478,146 passengers in 2007. It is the second-busiest passenger airport in Japan, busiest air freight hub in Japan, and eighth-busiest air freight hub in the world. It serves as the main international hub of Japan's Flag carriers Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Nippon Cargo Airlines."

Several U.S. airlines use Narita Airport as their destination in Japan. Northwest Airlines, now Delta Airlines, the largest U.S. airline, has been using the Narita Airport for many years, but recently started flying into Haneda Airport, the Japan airport closest to the City of Tokyo.

How to Get to Tokyo from Narita Airport

Going to downtown Tokyo from Japan's Narita Airport is so easy. You can take a bus shuttle from Narita to Tokyo downtown. The fare varies but originally from around 3,000 yen. You will see the bus stops outside the arrival lobby. You can always ask English-speaking workers at Narita Airport.

You can also take a train. There is an JR express train that you can take from Narita Airport to downtown Tokyo. It takes around 60 minutes. It operates until late at night.

Of course, you can also take a taxi, which can cost you more than the train or bus shuttle. The fares in Japan are a little higher than in the U.S. so be sure to check the schedule of either the bus shuttle or the train if you do not want to spend more money than you have to. When the train stops operating at night, the only way to and from Narita Airport to Tokyo is by taxi.

If you are coming from the U.S., there are U.S. airlines that fly into the closest airport to downtown Tokyo, the Haneda Airport. That is another option you can choose.
