Mail Order Brides:
Looking for a future bride from the Philippines? How about Russia? The Philippine Islands and Russia are the two countries where most Mail Order Brides come from. The influx of mail order brides from Russia happened after the end of the Cold War. South East Asian countries used to be the origin of most mail order brides that come to the U.S. and Europe. Times have changed. Russia, and other member countries of what used to called Soviet Union, are now very popular origins of mail order brides. But, be careful! In line with being a "supplier" of beautiful brides, Russia is now well-known for Russian mail order bride scams. The scammers are not necessarily women --some of them are organized crimes preying on men's emotional, social and physical needs. So, be aware! The U.S. State Department has posted a warning about such Russian mail order brides scam.
How about the Philippines and other Asian countries - you might ask? Not generally. I have never heard of --so far anyway - of organized mail order bride crimes from the Philippines and/or other Asian countries. There are other "scammers", but they are solely individuals (i.e, some of these women have "common-law" husbands who would lie to their future husbands in law about their real status. As soon as they get their residency in the United States or Canada, they would make excuses or find ways on how to separate or divorce from their North American husband. The United States Customs and Immigration Department has regulated and enforced laws against these individual scams and at the same time, have protected mail order brides from abuse from their husbands. Nowadays, a mail order bride has to wait for a few years before she can apply for citizenship after marrying an American man. I think this is a good protection against abuse of the American immigration system. On the flip side, any mail order bride that has been abused - physically - by the husband, can file for protection - without losing her right to apply for U.S. citizenship.
Coming to a different country to marry someone you do not know or have met only a couple of times (the minimum "acquaintance" requirement by the Immigration department), is a very risky proposition. But, so many people do it. The Asian ladies are lured by the prospect of a better life for her and her family (I know - I've been there - done that). And rightfully so. If you look at the background of the ladies from the Philippines and/or Asia who came to the United States, you will see that most of them have college education. But college education in the Philippines does not always guarantee a good paying job (just like here in the U.S., - you will say). But, a "not good paying job" here in the U.S. is 40 times better than a not a good paying job in the Philippines - or other countries where the mail order brides come from.

Filipina Mail Order Brides - Second Class Citizens?
Are you a mail order bride? Meaning: that you met your American husband by exchange of mail or online correspondence. Do you know of any so-called "Mail order brides"? If your answer is "Yes", you are invited to respond to the comments to this news story by the Filipino Press, specifically Senator Ramon Revilla's reaction to the jokes made by Alex Baldwin when he was a guest at David Letterman's "Late Show..".
"Baldwin, 51, who is divorced and has a child with actress Kim Bassinger, said in that May 12 Letterman interview that he would love to have more children and went on to quip that he was “thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point ... or a Russian one.” Letterman chimed in that he wanted one for later also."
Here is the part commenting about Sen. Revilla's reaction:
"First to react was Sen. Ramon Revilla, who said in a privilege speech that Baldwin's comment was "insensitive and uncalled for" and an insult to millions of Filipinos. He called the actor "arrogant" and said he is apparently unaware that the Philippines has a law against mail-order brides."
