Directions to the Rush Passport Processing Center, Minneapolis

This is your travelers guide for applying for a a rush passport processing in Minneapolis. This will also give you information on who to contact for rush processing of your passport in other states. For a starter, in Minneapolis, the address for the rush passport processing is:

Minneapolis Rush Passport Agency

212 3rd Ave S
Minneapolis, MN 55401

Minneapolis Court House

Across the Minneapolis Court House (pictured) is the Hennepin County Government Center. They used to process passports but that has stopped since this year. You may contact some post offices for information on where to apply for not-rush processing of passports. The info here is for rush processing.

There are embassies and consulates that process rush passport service. That includes fast application for first time passport, rush additional pages, and rush passport renewal. You may go ahead and read this or call 1-877-487-2778. But if you call first, you will be waiting for someone to answer your call for a long time.

The U.S. State Department has several passport processing centers. Your county may also have one. Check the government number of your courthouse. And of course, the U.S. State Department is the agency of the government that handles passport processing.

There are several places where you can have your passport expedited. If you are not in a hurry, the U.S. state website Department of State Website will tell you to mail the passport to them, and you wait until they mail it back to you. You will be responsible for paying the express mail. If you are applying for a rush service, the U.S. State Department also has some passport processing agencies specifically for that purpose. Since I live in Minneapolis, that is where I went. You can find the other agencies here.

Minneapolis Rush Passport Processing Center

The Minneapolis passport processing center in Minneapolis is a fairly new one - about a couple of years old. It is a very important service for the citizens to have so I am glad that they have one here in my hometown. It is located in downtown Minneapolis, about a block from the U.S. Post Office in downtown Minneapolis, a block from the Federal Court House, and about 2 blocks from the City Hall of Minneapolis (pictured above). It is very accessible by bus or train (the light rail train serves the airports - Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 - and this is the fastest way to the Minneapolis Rush Passport Processing). The train costs $1.75 after 9am and before 3p.m. The ticket is good for 2-1/2 hours so you can use it round trip but only within 2-1/2 hours. When you take the light rail, get off at the "Government Center" stop. You will see the building pictured (Minneapolis Court House). Walk on the side of the Court House building towards the Federal Court House (located at the back). Cross the street to the Federal Court House, walk one more block, and on the left is a brick building. That is a passport processing center.

When I called their toll-free number, I was told that Minneapolis is the only office that does not require any appointment, meaning, you may "walk-in". All the other offices in their website require an pre-set appointment.

I intended just to apply for additional pages but when I got to the place, the friendly representative suggested that it is for my benefit to apply for a new one now since I have only 2 pages left in my passport. So, even though my old passport is due to expire in 2012 I agreed that applying for a new one would be a very good idea.

Here is how you get to the Passport Processing Center from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport:

(1) If you are in Minneapolis or are flying into Minneapolis, from the airport, take the light rail service going to downtown Minneapolis ($1.75 during non-rush hour - $2.25 during rush hours (6:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and between 3:00pm. - 6:30 pm. Mondays thru Fridays). Get off at the Government Center. On the same side where you got off (that is the City Hall), walk towards 4th Street. From 4th St, turn right and go 2 blocks towards 2nd Street. Behind the Government Center is the Federal Courthouse. Across from it is the City Service Center. Walk past that to the next block and you will see a limestone building with pillars (that is the Federal building where they process the passports).

When you get to the building - here is what you are going to do -

When you enter the building, you are going through security x-rays. But no need to worry. The security staff at that building are all so professional. After entering through security, you will be directed to turn left, and there you will see the sign for passport processing. It is a very nice, very quiet place. It is well secured, there is a security stand that overlooks the public seating area. They even have computers for you to use in case you need to print a letter from your employer or school for the purpose of your travel. The guard will ask you the purpose of your visit and direct you to the right window (I believe it is Window A). The clerks that helped me in Window A are both so nice and accommodating. The female one was the one who told me what I should do. She gave me the necessary necessary paperwork (DS 82). You can also print this at home and bring it to the center. If you did not, you will be asked to fill it out and come back to the counter with your passport photo and the fees. (If you do not have the passport pictures, the clerk will give you directions to the U.S. Post Office, a block away. It charges $15.00 for 4 pictures. Walgreens, at Nicollet Mall (take Bus No. 16 at the corner of 3rd and Marquette, or walk about 8 blocks, or take the light rail to Nicollet Mall, walk 3 blocks to Walgreens) charges about $9.00 for passport photos) You might be able to get it cheaper somewhere else.

(2) After picture taking, you walk back to the Federal Building Passport Processing and give the representative your pictures and your application, including the application fee and the $70.00 Expedite Fee. The clerk will tell you to come back before 3p.m. The office closes at 3:00p.m. but they actually close the windows earlier than that.

(3) You may kill time by having lunch across the street (it is a hotel). They have great buffet at this hotel. If you have time after your lunch, you may explore the old train exhibits at the lobby of the hotel. The Union Depot used to be a train stop in Minneapolis. It has now been rehabbed with a skating rink, hotels, and a few retail stores.

(4) If you want to explore downtown Minneapolis instead, you can take a bus (or light rail - use your ticket that you purchased earlier) - to Nicollet Mall where the shops are located. This is not advisable, however, if you think you won't be able to come back on time before the office closes. You do not want to come back to the Federal Building and find that the office is already closed.

(5) Returning to the Passport Processing Center: Take the short bus ride to 2nd Street, and get off the City Hall (if you are taking a light rail, get off at the "Government Center" stop. Go 2 blocks to the left - to the passport center. When you get back to the Passport Processing, your passport should be ready!

I was really surprised at how fast I was able to get my new passport. The representative even gave me additional pages because she noticed from my old passport that I do a lot of traveling. You may want to request the same if you travel a lot.

All in all, applying for a rush passport or renewal service in Minneapolis is so quick and easy. It gave me such a positive experience so I decided to write about it for the guidance of others who want to use the Minneapolis Passport Center.
